Thanks
to all our volunteers we now serve the community's needy in three
key areas:
On
a daily basis, a team of drivers pick up food and other dry goods
from corporations, institutions and individuals (thanks to the donation
of a van from Branch 43 of the Royal Canadian Legion) for our use,
as well as for 45 other charities and groups, including 10 schools,
who offer breakfast and lunch programs for students in need, in
the Durham region.
Our store, which receives donated clothing and household items that
are then sold at very low prices or in some cases at no cost to
the very needy, provides needed financial support for our operations.
Our primary function, which was officially opened by Bishop
Robert Clune on March 10, 1991, continues to serve low cost
meals in a dignified manner to from 150 to 190 people daily,
seven days a week, where children under 12 eat free. For those who
cannot afford the $1.25 meal there are downtown churches and organizations
that buy tickets and distribute them free of charge.
